Last night

If anyone was at the International last night all I can say is thanks. I can honestly say I think it is up there in the top ten nights I have ever had the pleasure of being involved in there. That is saying alot too as I think I have easily done over 500 shows in the place over the years. Those that were there will know how the show just took off at the end with some of the best off the cuff messing that has ever evolved out of one comedian who was not on the bill sticking his head around the corner. Thanks to Karl Spain on that front. But also thanks to Neil Hickey, Bernard O'Shea and an unbelievably in form Colm McDonnell who was just amazing last night. Thanks of course to Aidan for booking a wonderful show and also to Leo our door man who is the rock upon which the curch survives these days. If anyone ever comes down you should give Leo a big hug as he is one of the most amazing guys I know and you know him too as one of my Chinese co workers from Abrakebabra. He prefers to remain humble and probably enjoys the fact that do to a massve haircut not too many people make the connection. But secretly I think he would love a big hug from some attractive female fan of the work experience. I would also like to point out that Matthew Collins did an exceptional open spot and is also an International Comedy Club record holder for quick completion of a Rubiks Cube.

This brings me to clear up one small issue on a post someone has put below. I do not know where I was quoted as saying only two people from the show have continued to do comedy but I am sure I have been misquoted so let me clear this up. Below is a list of comedians from Joy In the Hood who have continued with varying degrees of success. I will be as informative as possible but I can only say that most of this information comes from my glancing from a distance.

Willa White and Eric Lalor have been mentioned below so I don't need to repeat it. Eric has also just been picked to perform at the Montreal Showcase in Vicar St. in Feb and Willa has been opening for Tommy Tiernan recently.

Pat and Jamie O'Shea both opened for me on my last tour and continue to do comedy in Cork and began their own workshop in a city center venue during the year which was well supported by a previously hostile local media.

Dean Scurry who as a result of time constraints we noticed after filming the pilot episode in Ballymun did not feature striongly in the TV show has continued to do comedy as well. He runs the house of fun comedy club with Willa and Eric and gigs around the country on the comedy circuit.

Colm O'Mahoney AKA cheddar is sitting his leaving cert so by order of the authorities he has not been able to continue his comedy career until it is finshed. However he performed 3 times in the Cork Opera house with me on my last tour and hosted the show in the Marquee in Cork in front of 4000 people.

Kevin Goldsmith moved to Dublin and is now working as a scaffolder while continuing his comedy career in venues like the International. Before moving up he became a regular in Cork venues like the LV and the Craichouse.

Darren Shine sporadically gets involved with very good results but has acting commitments with Limerick Local Drama groups. He has been over to Manchester to gig with Matin Beans.

Martin Beans has been very high profile in his comedy achievments. The media were quite interested in the first traveller comedian. He gigs on a regular basis but has moved to Manchester and is now running his own comedy venue there. he has been in talks with an Irish Production company about a TV show following his progress in comedy.

Paddy Taylor from Derry has continued to do comedy in the small circuit of Northern Ireland. He has had a lot of interest from the industry up there and has performed in the Empire among other venues. His travelling is restricted by the fact that himself and his wife had a baby girl recently. Which is of course a massive joy but a hinderance to getting to more gigs. Indeed Derry may be one of the most inconvienant locations to lauch a comedy career as you have to travel the furthest distances to find gigs. He did open up for me in Letterkenny though and is one of the strongest acts of those listed above.

Unfortunately I have had no feedback from the group in Mt. Vernon so I can't say. Though I thought that Jamie Duff and Alan Quail had so much potential. I hope they are well.

So in answer to your question about whether I am disappointed I guess I would have to say no I am not. But thank you for asking as I am sure some people were curious.

Peace out Y'all

Ryanair

Not that I am going to bore you with Ryanair complaints but lets just say this is just a warning. If you are ever paying for baggage on a Ryanair flight let it be known that no matter how many bags you pay for you still only have a 15k limit of weight. So for example if you have pre paid for two bags on the internet when booking that means that they must be on average 7.5k each. In other words you might as well get a bigger bag rather than pay for 2. But make sure you don't go over as it is 10 euros a kilo. Anwyay I was not the victim but I knew someone who despite paying for two bags already was hit for another 80 euros.

In response to the Tuam post down below I just wanted to clear one thing up. Though I appreciate the feedback I must make it clear that the program was not about Tuam but was about the Travelling community that live in Tuam. I am glad you enjoyed the DVD.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

So the main holiday has come and gone but in that wonderful Irish Christmas way we will stretch the holiday till well into the first week in January. It took me a good few years to get used to that though I must say. Now I am well used to it. This has only been my 5th Christmas in Ireland. I have been here for many more years than that as you know but I rarely stayed until recently. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and for those that hate Christmas I am sure you are glad its over. In fact for those that hate Christmas I recommend living in NY where you can get back to normal on the 26th and even go to the cinema on the 25th.

I am glad that the blog has had a little bit more activity of late. The last discussion was very interesting and I thank everyone for their feedback. Indeed some of it was riddled with unashamed hatred but all opinions are welcome. I am not feeling very argumentative now myself as the festive season has been exceptionally relaxing.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the people of Fatima Mansions who took part in the making of the Documentary that was on RTE2 on Christmas Day. I found it strangely emotional and very enjoyable. Particularly because it was so involving of the kids both in front of and behind the camera. I think even Bertie Ahern found it slightly difficult when confronted with children. Well done to the people of the Ark who put the project together. As a Rialto resident I live in hope that the new development that replaced Fatima will bring a prosperous future to the area and its residents. I am especially proud of Krisma the rapper from the show who some of you might know has performed during some of my shows in Vicar St. She is a real talent at such a young age and very courageous to be putting herself out there so young.

Some of you may have seen on my myspace page that I released some dates for Vicar St. They are on sale now for May 3,4,5. However I think there are only a few left. I may do 3 more in May but then after that I will be waiting until September to do anymore. So just giving the Blogger regulars warning in case you want to see the show sooner.

Hope you are all well.
Keep the comments coming.

Comments

In reference to the comment below I might just recommend that to be taken a little bit more seriously you should try avoiding starting your points with xenophobic comments. But in reference to the very limiting comment about the church not being all bad I think you will find you can say that about everything. You would in fact never discuss much if you could never talkl about anything that was not all bad. I am sure you would even find people who would have rather discussed Hitler's unbelievable organisational skills.

But one must also realise that while all involved in the church are not bad the church intself as an institution has beliefs it preaches. Rome persists with outdated views on sexuality and uses its massive publicity power as well as its moral hold on society to push it on people. I find that this is no longer of benefit to our society and I have already given the examples of this. All people in the church are not bad but the institutions opinions can be discussed as all emcompassing.

Bishops

These days the only type of Bishop I will listen to about moral issues are members of my own family. I see though that the Catholic Bishops have issued their statement of concern about the issues around the age of consent. Once again they use the language of shame and fear when speaking about issues of sexuality and refuse to move on in any way from their dated and damaging beliefs. Saying things like young people need to be protected from themselves is such negative language and only serves to remind me of how their demeaning way of inflicting rules about sexuality in the past has helped to create unbelievable amounts of sexual dysfunction. They also reminded us of their belief that sex before marriage is considered wrong in their eyes. Now you can say what you want about what age you think a person is ready to have sex. I think that is a moral discussion worth debating. However I think in a large crowd in 2006 their will be very few people who will believe in waiting till they are married to have a sexual experience. Their opinions on this issue are dated. When you accompany these beliefs with their stubborn stance on issues like the use of condoms in Africa you wonder why more people on the Radio today did not decide to finally dismiss outright anything the church has to say on the issue.

I have not even discussed the most obvious issue in relation to this matter. That of course being the Church's record of hiding the very predatory behaviour that brought about the reason for this discussion in the first place. In fact we all know that it was Irish Bishops that were very much involved in the cover up that kept instituional abuse going well into my own time in Ireland. Being a student in Ferns helps you to know about the issue. In fact Bishop Comiskey was the Bishop in my time in St. Peters and was quiet about my own principal whose behaviour was most definitely known to members of the clergy. As I have often said that Principal eventually went to jail but the chuch in my eyes has never properly acted in a way that warrants me to give them any moral authority again.

People might consider this to be reactionary. But I consider the total dismissal of the church's ideas on the issue to be absolutely vital if we are to find a new set of moral beliefs. Lets face it, who knows what to believe anymore. So much of so many peoples beliefs come from some religous source. I know to a certain extent that mine do. In listening to the radio today one thing seemed to be unanimous, that was the need to find out what we think is acceptable as a society in relation to certain issues including sex. That is one of the great things about the age of consent issue. We are all talking about it. But one thing I am not hearing at all is the voice of young people in all this. Thats why I hate when I hear things like young people need to be protected from themselves. It is so important therefore that we completely break free from the baggage of religous morality on the issue and believe it to be our own. Then we can own it and it is much easier to act and believe on it then

All day I heard adults talking about what was acceptable when they were young. But the thing is that they are not young now. Who has decided that 16 is in fact too young. It very well may be. But it is not too young just because you were 19. TImes have changed and young people have come to terms with the issue of sexuality free from alot of the jargon that previous generations have grown up with. So we need to know what they feel. If we are indeed in a moral transition period it is time to get some concensus. But is not only going to come by adults making all the decisions. They can only be part of the process. The church says the politicians should make the decisions. But we know from their behaviour in relation to corruption that they can also not be 100 percent trusted.

It is up to all of us to try to remain open minded on the issue and not just force our own experiences on everyone else. Experience is invaluable no doubt but for the record I was younger than 16 and I can gladly say that I have not regrets whatsoever. So who can say that one age is too young. Education is key so that when people do make that decision they behave responsibly and without shame.

Final Thought!

The church says it is a sacred act. Even that could be bullshit. Discuss?

Its late in the evening.

Up still from the nerves and excitment of doing Questions and Answers. Must say I was quite nervous doing the show as it was something I had never really done before. Truth be told I had mixed emotions about the whole thing. On one hand I am delighted because it was my first time and as the show went on I really started to relax and enjoy it. On the other hand I wish I relaxed faster so that I could get my earlier points across a little more confidently.

I really enjoyed the company of everyone on the panel and was definitely excited by the fact that I was sat next to a government minister. And before you go making any jokes it was not because it was a female minister. In fact I would have been just as excited to be next to Willie O'Dea.

One thing I learned about Questions and Answers is it is a good thing to watch the people who ask the questions very closely as a lot of them are young members of political parties and may one day be in Government themselves. In fact that was one of the most interesting parts of the evening. You have a drink with the audience after the show and some great converstions were had as a result.

All in all I must say, very nice people are involved in that show and it was a lovely experience I would like to repeat.

Normally I do not respond to angry posts in the comment section however the person who asked about the Limerick episode reminded me of something I wanted to find out myself. I found out that the Limerick episode was not repeated about 3 weeks ago when I was signing DVDs in the Crescent Shopping Center in Limerick. Tanya from the show called out and asked me why it had not been repeated. That was the first I had heard of it. I never enquired into the matter but as Pat has already pointed out I have nothing to do with RTE scheduling. In fact anyone who knows me would be aware of the fact that Myself and the RTE scheduling process are often at odds. If you recall they took a break from Joy in the Hood during the first run after 4 episodes and took a week off for a double episode of lost. When we returned the Belfast show had half the amount of viewers as the epsisode in Tuam 2 weeks before.

I would imagine that it was simply a mistake more than a decision. As a result though I might see if they will find a spot to repeat in during the Christmas season where there is loads of time to fill. As for the conspiratorial tone of the post by that person I would suggest saving such paranoia for more constructive targets like the government, violent gangs or indeed RTE.

A pleasure as always

Hi

I have been the worst I have been in years for posting and I am sorry. I am sure there are few of you left who will be reading this as I have been so bad. Anyway I am running out the door and it hit me that keep being in a rush and not writing anything so I better just write something quick.

For those that follow my TV appearances I will be on Questions and Answers this Monday. This is something very different for me but since I was on the radio with Marian Finucane a few weeks ago. Nov 11 to be exact I have been having a lot of offers like that. So thanks Marian.
